Webtoon, Tapas, and more...
Webcomics have been around for a while, but Webtoon, Tapas, and other web-exclusive platforms have changed the way comics are read. I am reading webcomics to get familiar with the themes and elements that make webcomics popular.
Eight months ago, I was surprised to see a billboard near my house advertising a BL comic on Tapas. Content related to comics doesn't get a lot of traction in the mainstream (with the exceptions of the Marvel and DC movies). Every once in a while I will see a billboard for a novel by Stephen King or James Patterson, but I never even considered that a comic, let alone one posted on a website would be featured along a major boulevard.
As a part of my commitment to write more, I also need to read more. But reading more isn't just about reading more novels in the genre of your choice. Ever since deciding to dip my toe into making comics, reading more comics of all genres also became a priority.
In the last month or so, I have embarked on a deep dive into what Webtoon and Tapas have to offer for creators. But, it's also important to look at the content on each site. Each platform has different themes and elements that are popular across all genres on the site.
There are plenty of comics that I have perused, but I will be keeping a monthly list of comics that I find interesting enough to stick with. As this list evolves, it might also include some reviews, but for now, it is just a list. Under each website, I plan to have a "currently reading" and "want to read" category.
